As from 1 January 2020, new IMO regulations will be introduced requiring all companies to use marine fuels not exceeding 0.5% sulphur content (instead of 3.5% today), in all zones – except ECA zones where the obligation not to exceed 0,1% remains.
By 31 December 2019, the 3.5% HFO contained in the tanks of our vessels must have been consumed, each tank must have been thoroughly cleaned and the fuel system of the ships adapted to manage the different specifications of the new product. We will therefore have to start well before the date to pump the new fuel oil as the tanks are ready in order to guarantee the compliance of our vessels on 1 January. The cost of implementing this regulation will be significant and will increase the cost of freight.
In this context, please note that all Marfret lines will renew their BAF mechanism as of 1 December 2019. Separate notes detailing the conditions of application on each line are being sent.
We remain at your disposal for any further information.
